Miniature Collectible Crocheted and Needle Felted Teddy Bears and Bear Friends

by Marge Wiese, Thread and Fiber Artist

My thread and fiber creations range in size between one to twelve inches standing. I use a variety of threads, yarns, various fibers, and techniques in the creation of my Teddy Bears and Bear Friends. I may offer a limited edition of a particular style, or a series of similar designs. Each collectible creation is handmade by me. Some may look similar, but no two will ever be exactly the same. They are all one-of-a-kind (OOAK).

For my miniature crocheted Teddy Bears and Bear Friends, under six inches, I use the very small sizes of crochet hooks to make the hundreds of tiny stitches that go into each lovable creation. For the small size creations, six to twelve inches, I use slightly larger hooks and often crochet with multiple threads at the same time to create unique colors for the basic bear or bear friend. As I crochet, I create the "fabric" that makes the shape of each bear or bear friend. Their sweet loving features are individually hand stitched with care. Gentle shading is added to enhance the individual personality. Each creation is filled with lots of love, hugs, and some "beary special" polyester or wool stuffing. Most of my crocheted creations are five-way jointed to allow for creative positioning. Some of my creations are dressed, or have accessories. Some of the accessories are carefully shaped, then stiffened, to retain their unique shape.

My needle felted sculptures vary in size. I use a variety of different types of wool when creating my sculptures. Needle felting is a wonderful creative art form. There is no right or wrong way to create a needle felted project. My preference is to have my sculptures firmly needle felted when completed. The process of needle felting involves stabbing, or poking wool, with a special barbed felting needle over and over again. As you continue to stab the wool it compresses, creating firmness and shape. Bits of wool are added, and the stabbing process is repeated, forming a firm base or core for the sculpture. As you continue to add and felt more bits of wool, your sculpture takes its desired form. Completing a needle felted wool sculpture can range in time from one day to several weeks, depending on the complexity of the desired results.

As my Princess4Paws Teddy Bears and Bear Friends are born, they are issued a signed detailed birth certificate (Certificate of Authenticity), with a photo of the creation. Some of my creations are also signed "signature" pieces.
